German certification is not one universal exam. Goethe-Zertifikat, telc and TestDaF all assess German, but they serve different purposes, use different formats and may be treated differently by the organisation receiving your result.
Start with the requirement, not the provider. Ask the university, employer, professional body or public authority for the exact accepted certificate, level, module rules and recency policy in writing. A certificate that is suitable for one route is not automatically suitable for another.
Goethe, telc and TestDaF are different exam families
Goethe-Zertifikat
The Goethe-Institut offers CEFR-aligned exams from A1 to C2. At B1, B2, C1 and C2, Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking are modular. This makes Goethe useful when the receiving organisation accepts the relevant Goethe certificate or module combination.
This guide's detailed preparation track is Goethe-Zertifikat B1. It is a general-language qualification, not a university-admission test and not the same exam as telc Deutsch B1.
telc Deutsch
telc has a broad portfolio rather than one German exam. It includes separate general examinations such as telc Deutsch B1 and telc Deutsch B2, dual-level examinations, and specialist versions for work, medicine or nursing.
The general telc Deutsch B1 examination has written and oral parts. Its written section includes Reading, Language Elements, Listening and Writing, so a Goethe-only preparation plan does not cover the telc format completely. Choose the exact telc title required by your route before buying materials or booking.
TestDaF
TestDaF is designed mainly to demonstrate German for higher education. It assesses Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking and reports each skill separately as TestDaF levels, or TDN. The digital TestDaF also reports a 0-20 scaled score for each skill.
Many German higher-education routes use TDN requirements, but the university decides its admission rule. Do not substitute a Goethe or telc certificate for TestDaF, or vice versa, without confirmation from the institution.
How to choose the right CEFR level
CEFR levels describe what you can do with a language; they are not a ladder that every applicant must climb one certificate at a time.
- A1-A2: basic everyday transactions and familiar information.
- B1: connected communication about familiar life, work, travel and personal interests.
- B2: more independent interaction, clearer argument and comprehension of more complex material.
- C1-C2: advanced academic, professional and nuanced language use.
Use this decision order:
- Obtain the receiving organisation's exact requirement.
- Confirm the exam family, exact title and minimum CEFR or TDN level.
- Check whether all skills or specified modules must be passed together.
- Check whether the organisation expects a recently issued result even when the certificate itself does not expire.
- Take an official sample at that level under the published conditions.
If an official B1 sample feels manageable only with frequent translation, repeated replay or unlimited drafting, improve general German before shifting most of your time to exam technique. If you finish accurately but slowly, format practice may be the larger need.
Current Goethe-Zertifikat B1 format and scoring
The official Goethe B1 regulations describe four modules that may be taken individually or together.
- Lesen: 65 minutes; understand notices, correspondence, press and opinion texts.
- Hören: About 40 minutes; understand announcements, conversations, presentations and discussion.
- Schreiben: 60 minutes; write personal and formal messages and an opinion contribution.
- Sprechen: About 15 minutes for a pair; plan together, present a topic, respond and ask questions.
Speaking normally has 15 minutes of preparation. Each module is scored out of 100 and is passed at 60 points. There is no compensating aggregate score: a strong Reading result does not turn a failed Writing module into a pass.
Goethe certificates do not themselves expire. However, the Goethe-Institut warns that employers and institutions may expect a certificate issued within a more recent period. The recipient's rule remains decisive.
Run a preparation diagnostic
Use the official Goethe B1 practice set, a timer and one uninterrupted sitting per module.
Record more than the final score:
- accuracy by task type;
- unanswered items and guesses;
- time at the end of each part;
- listening errors caused by vocabulary, attention or note-taking;
- writing omissions, register problems and repeated grammar errors;
- speaking pauses, unclear pronunciation and missed interaction moves.
For Writing and Speaking, use the official task instructions and sample performances rather than inventing a percentage from an answer key. A teacher or trained reviewer is more useful than an uncalibrated automated estimate.
Classify every error as one of four causes: language gap, misunderstood instruction, weak process or time pressure. Your study plan should spend most time on the two largest causes.
Use a level-specific study workflow
If you are below B1
Build core B1 language first. Work on high-frequency vocabulary, word order, case control, verb forms, connectors and comprehension of normal-speed everyday German. Use short daily reading and listening, then summarise the message without translating every sentence.
If you are near B1
Alternate language repair and exam tasks. A useful weekly cycle is:
- one timed Reading or Listening part;
- one focused lesson on the errors it exposed;
- one Writing task with revision;
- two recorded Speaking runs;
- one mixed timed session;
- one error-log review.
If you already perform at B1
Prioritise consistency. Complete full modules under official timing, practise transitions between tasks and remove avoidable losses such as incomplete instructions, weak planning and rushed endings. Aim for a buffer above 60 in every module rather than relying on a borderline result.
Review Writing and Speaking properly
For each Writing response, use two passes.
Task pass: Did you address every content point, use the required text type and maintain the right relationship with the reader?
Language pass: Is the message coherent? Are connectors purposeful? Are verb position, tense, case, agreement, spelling and punctuation controlled well enough for B1?
Do not memorise one letter and force it onto every prompt. Build reusable functions instead: requesting, apologising, explaining, comparing, giving reasons and proposing a solution.
For Speaking, record the complete task. Review:
- whether you responded to your partner rather than delivering isolated lines;
- whether the presentation had a clear opening, sequence and close;
- whether reasons and examples supported your opinion;
- whether hesitation blocked meaning;
- whether pronunciation was intelligible without imitating a particular accent;
- whether you asked and answered follow-up questions.
Repeat the same prompt once after feedback. Then transfer the correction to a different prompt so improvement is not tied to memorised wording.
Booking and readiness checklist
- I have written confirmation of the accepted exam and level.
- I know whether individual modules or a combined certificate are required.
