UCAT is an admissions test used alongside academic qualifications, interviews and other selection evidence for relevant medicine and dentistry programmes. It is not a medical-knowledge examination, and there is no universal UCAT pass score or score that guarantees an offer.
This guide covers UCAT 2026 for UK and partner-university applications. UCAT ANZ is a distinct test route with different operational rules and Situational Judgement reporting. Applicants considering Australia or New Zealand must read the Consortium's eligibility guidance before choosing which test to sit.

Who should take UCAT 2026
The UCAT Consortium states that applicants to relevant courses at its UK and partner universities for 2027 entry, or deferred 2028 entry, should take UCAT 2026. The test is compulsory only where the specific programme says it is.
Before registering, check each course because:
- participating universities use UCAT in different ways;
- rules can differ by programme and applicant group;
- some universities use a total-score threshold;
- some consider individual subtests or Situational Judgement;
- others weight UCAT with academic results or use it at a later selection stage; and
- alternative requirements can apply to particular applicant categories.
UCAT does not determine academic eligibility. Meeting a university's UCAT expectation does not replace its subject, grade, degree, residency, language or work-experience requirements.
Keep the UK and ANZ routes separate
An applicant applying only to UK or listed partner universities normally takes UCAT. An applicant also applying to Australian or New Zealand consortium universities should follow the official instruction to take UCAT ANZ and complete the process for sharing that result with UK choices.
Candidates may not sit both UCAT and UCAT ANZ in the same year. Do not create two bookings to “keep options open”. Confirm the correct route from the current eligibility page first.
Current UCAT format and timing
The standard UCAT contains four subtests and takes 117 minutes 30 seconds in total: 111 minutes of subtest time plus 6 minutes 30 seconds of instruction time.

Approved access arrangements can produce a different authorised test version and timing. Apply for arrangements and wait for approval before booking if support is required.
Abstract Reasoning is not part of the current test. Preparation material that still teaches it as a live subtest is outdated.
How UCAT 2026 is scored
Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making and Quantitative Reasoning are the cognitive subtests. Each receives a scaled score from 300 to 900, giving a total cognitive score from 900 to 2700.
Situational Judgement is reported separately in the UK as Band 1 to Band 4, with Band 1 the highest.
The official marking rules include:
- no negative marking for an incorrect response;
- most cognitive questions worth one mark;
- two marks for Decision Making multiple-statement questions, with one mark for a partially correct response; and
- no adaptive delivery: performance on one question does not change which questions appear later.
Raw marks are converted to scaled scores so different test forms remain comparable. A practice provider cannot issue an official UCAT scaled score or predict a university decision.
Results and the admissions boundary
Test-centre candidates receive a score report before leaving. Approved OnVUE candidates receive results through their UCAT account shortly after the test, generally within 24 hours. Preliminary mean scores and deciles are published during the testing period; final means, deciles and percentiles follow after testing ends.
UCAT 2026 results are valid for the corresponding 2027 UCAS admissions cycle, including deferred 2028 entry where allowed. The Consortium supplies results directly to UK university choices after matching UCAT and UCAS data. Candidates should make the identifying information in both records consistent.
The result is one admissions input. It is not:
- a pass certificate;
- an interview guarantee;
- an offer of admission;
- evidence that academic entry requirements are met; or
- transferable automatically to a later admissions cycle.
What each subtest demands
Verbal Reasoning
Verbal Reasoning tests whether conclusions follow from dense written information. Train passage location, qualification words, author claims and the difference between false and not established. The main speed gain comes from separating evidence search from final judgement.
Decision Making
Decision Making covers logical deductions, syllogisms, interpreting information, probability, Venn diagrams and evaluating arguments. Write the minimum useful notation. Long working can be as costly as weak logic.
Quantitative Reasoning
Quantitative Reasoning uses tables, charts and practical numerical information. Train ratios, rates, percentages, averages, conversions, proportional change and estimation. Calculator fluency matters, but deciding what to calculate matters more.
Situational Judgement
Situational Judgement tests professional judgement in scenarios. Focus on patient safety, honesty, confidentiality, escalation, teamwork and acting within competence. Separate the appropriateness of an action from the importance of a factor; they are different tasks.
Use a three-stage preparation workflow
Stage 1: learn the interface and item families
Use the official tutorials before chasing speed. Learn the on-screen calculator, flagging, navigation and the recurring question forms. Record baseline accuracy and completion for each subtest.
Stage 2: build method under controlled time
Practise one item family at a time. For each family, define:
- the first thing to inspect;
- the minimum working needed;
- a time-based exit rule;
- the common trap; and
- the condition for an educated guess.
Then combine families in timed subtest blocks. Because there is no negative marking, an unanswered item is never strategically better than a final guess before time expires.
Stage 3: rehearse the complete sequence
Complete full official practice tests under standard conditions. Follow the real order, use only permitted tools and include the instruction screens in the routine. Review score and pace separately: improved accuracy with collapsing completion is not readiness.
Review errors by decision cost
For every wrong, guessed or slow question, record:
- Subtest and item family.
- Cause: comprehension, logic, arithmetic, judgement, interface or time.
- Decision point: the first moment the solution went off course.
- Fast method: the least work needed to solve it correctly.
- Exit rule: when it should have been guessed and left.
- Transfer rule: one sentence usable on a new item.
Add one pace label:
- clean: correct within target time;
- slow: correct but too expensive;
- recoverable: wrong because of a fixable method error;
- guess: correctly abandoned under the exit rule; or
- trap: repeated misconception requiring focused drills.
Re-test recoverable and trap errors with unseen questions. Do not judge progress only by the percentage correct in familiar banks.
