CELPIP is a computer-delivered English test from Paragon Testing Enterprises. The correct preparation path begins with the exact test edition: CELPIP-General assesses Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, while CELPIP-General LS assesses only Listening and Speaking.

Choose the correct CELPIP edition
CELPIP-General and CELPIP-General LS are not interchangeable labels for the same booking.
- CELPIP-General has four components. IRCC names this edition for Express Entry and other immigration programmes that require all four language abilities.
- CELPIP-General LS has Listening and Speaking only. IRCC's citizenship guidance accepts General or General LS as third-party English evidence in the circumstances described on its citizenship pages.
Do not infer that an edition accepted for one Canadian process will satisfy another. Record the programme name, the accepted test edition, the required level in each ability and the date-validity rule from the current government page.
CELPIP itself does not set a universal pass mark. A receiving organisation or government programme decides the levels it requires.

The current official format page describes CELPIP-General as a single-sitting test lasting under three hours.
Listening

Listening and Reading may contain unscored items used for test development. They look like scored items and can appear anywhere in those components, so there is no reliable way to identify and skip them.
CELPIP-General LS contains the Listening and Speaking components rather than a shortened version of all four skills. Confirm the live format shown for your selected edition when registering.
How CELPIP scoring works
Each component receives its own CELPIP level. CELPIP Levels 3-12 map numerically to CLB 3-12; for example, CELPIP Level 7 corresponds to CLB 7. Level 2 maps to CLB 1 or 2, while Levels 0-1 have no direct CLB equivalent.
This direct number match does not create one universal target. IRCC programmes can require different minimum levels, and eligibility may depend on every ability rather than an average. Use the programme table, not a generic claim that one CELPIP score is “enough”.
Listening and Reading
Listening and Reading responses are marked correct or incorrect by computer; unanswered questions are incorrect. The official score page labels its raw-score-to-level tables as approximate. Different test forms are equated for difficulty, so a practice raw mark should not be converted into a guaranteed official level.
During review, retain the raw mark as a diagnostic measure and record the official level only when it comes from an official score report.
Writing and Speaking
Writing is rated through four dimensions:
- Content and Coherence;
- Vocabulary;
- Readability;
- Task Fulfillment.
Speaking uses:
- Content and Coherence;
- Vocabulary;
- Listenability;
- Task Fulfillment.
Task Fulfillment includes whether the response is relevant, complete and appropriate in tone and length. A memorised response that sounds fluent but does not complete the task is therefore a poor preparation strategy.
Results and validity
CELPIP says official scores are normally posted online in 2–4 business days. The official score report can then be downloaded from the candidate account.
CELPIP makes scores accessible in the account for two years from the test date. A receiving institution can apply its own policy. IRCC separately says that results used for Express Entry must be less than two years old both when the profile is created and when the permanent-residence application is submitted.
These are different checks:
- the provider's account-access or score-report rule;
- the receiving programme's age-of-result rule;
- the date on which that rule is tested.
Book with enough margin for score release, document submission and an unplanned delay. Do not assume a result will arrive at the earliest published point.
Start with a four-skill diagnostic
For CELPIP-General, complete one official sample set in each skill before building a timetable. For General LS, diagnose only the two components you will take, but first confirm that General LS is accepted for your route.
Use realistic equipment: a computer, keyboard, headset and microphone. Follow the published response limits. The purpose is to find causes, not to manufacture a predicted official level.
Record:
- component and task type;
- raw correct answers for Listening or Reading;
- completion status for Writing or Speaking;
- evidence missed or misunderstood;
- rubric dimension that limited a productive response;
- language, instruction, timing, attention or interface cause;
- correction drill and retest date.
Skill preparation workflow
Listening
Preview the question purpose when the interface permits, then listen for meaning, speaker intention and changes in viewpoint rather than isolated keywords. After practice, use the transcript to locate the decisive phrase. Classify the miss as sound recognition, vocabulary, inference, attention or answer selection.
Reading
Separate locating information from interpreting attitude. For each error, mark the exact sentence that supports the answer and explain why the distractor fails. Build vocabulary from phrases and collocations in context rather than from disconnected word lists.
Writing
For the email, identify the relationship, purpose and all requested points before drafting. For the survey response, state a clear choice and develop reasons with relevant details. Review against all four official dimensions, especially completeness and tone, not only grammar.
Speaking
Record every practice response. Use the preparation time to choose a simple structure: position or purpose, two developed points, and a clear close. On review, listen for relevance, idea development, vocabulary precision, rhythm, pronunciation, pauses, grammar and sentence variety. Do not imitate an accent; aim for intelligibility and control.
Use a correction cycle
Repeat this sequence:
- Diagnose: choose one recurring, evidenced problem.
- Isolate: practise a small set focused on that problem.
- Explain: state why the correct answer or stronger response works.
- Reproduce: answer a fresh item under the real response limit.
- Integrate: complete a longer component section without pausing.
- Retest: compare the same error category, not only the total score.
A full simulation is useful after individual task procedures are stable. It tests endurance and transitions; it does not replace correction.

For productive skills, attach the written response or recording. A note such as “Speaking weak” is not actionable; “ideas were relevant but Task Fulfillment dropped because the recommendation was incomplete” is.
